Peridot

Peridot, or Olivine, is a magnesium iron silicate with a hardness of 7. Typically, it is olive, lime or bottle green in color, due to iron content. Peridot is found in rocks deep within the earth which are brought to the surface during volcanic activity. Peridots have even been detected in meteorites and lunar rocks! The Crusaders first introduced Europe to the stone in the Middle Ages when they brought it back from the island of Zebirget in the Red Sea. Egyptians and Romans had been adorning themselves with it for hundreds of years before that. Peridot can be found in Pakistan, Burma, Australia, Brazil, South Africa and Hawaii.
