Sutured Blonde Ammonite Whole with Pyrite

Ammonites are the fossilized remains of an extinct squid-like animal with an external chambered shell. Metaphysically associated with abundance, guidance along life's path, and personal, psychic, and spiritual development; aligning and balancing the chakra system, detecting and releasing energy blocks, clearing the meridians and nadi (“chakra channels”); spiritual protection, space clearing, and blessing a home.

This ammonite comes from the Mahajanga River Basin, near the village of Ambatolafia, in the Sitampiky commune, in the Boeny region of northwest Madagascar (left), located in the former province of Mahajanga/Majunga. It dates from the Early Cretaceous period, Albian age (~100 to 113.0 million years ago).  The leaf shaped patterns on the ammonite are known as "sutures", from the Latin sutura, meaning "a stich". The mineral composition is usually calcite or limestone, with occasional inclusions of pyrite or jasper.

This is a beautiful specimen of the far more rare "blonde" color that has some darker areas and fairly large patches of delicious pyrite.  I love it when pyrite is an inclusion in other minerals.  Some of the pyrite patches look like metallic gold oak leaves.  So cool.

This specimen weighs approximately .94 lb., and measures 4 3/4 X 3 1/4 X 1 1/4".
