In the Central Mtn. Ridge of the Republic of China, there are deposits of various kinds of jades suitable for carving into art items. "Serpentine Jade" is a silicate of sodium and aluminum that occurs in microcrystaline aggregates of a very firmly interconnected granular crystals. It has the appearance of an interwoven veined network of streaks and patches of 7 different colors. The primary colors of white, brown, orange, yellow, blue, green and purple, plus many mixed variations, are due to the presence of metallic oxides in the crystalline structure, such as iron, chromium, chloride, clorite, manganese, and magnesium.

These vases are hand carved from solid rock, heat treated to harden and further enhance the vibrant colors, and then given a high luster polish. To insure a watertight seal, the interiors are glazed. The intrinsic love of Jade in Chinese culture has survived through the ages, and is still believed to be "the essence of Heaven and Earth."
